How to Reach Bandarban:
From Dhaka: Overnight AC/non-AC buses (Green Line, Hanif, Shyamoli) run daily (8–10 hours).
From Chittagong: 2.5–3 hours by road (local buses, private cars, or microbuses).
By Air: Fly to Chittagong (Shah Amanat Airport), then drive to Bandarban.
Note: Foreigners must obtain a special permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs to visit the Hill Tracts.
Historical and Cultural Background
The name Bandarban translates to “The Dam of Monkeys.” The region has been historically inhabited by various indigenous tribes, including the Marma, Bawm, Tripura, Mro, and Khumi, each with unique languages, traditions, and spiritual beliefs.
Bandarban was once part of the Arakanese kingdom and later came under British rule. Today, it is a melting pot of cultures, where Buddhism, Christianity, and tribal animism coexist peacefully.
The Chakma and Marma communities form the largest groups here, deeply influenced by Burmese traditions. They celebrate Buddhist festivals, wear colorful ethnic attire, and live in traditional bamboo stilt houses.
